#1 Lars is clearly suffering from a psychological disease. His unusual attachment with the doll and his auditory hallucinations are common symptoms of schizophrenia. His intense caring for the doll carries on to the people around him, bringing his family to tears as well. Though they are not schizophrenic in a virus-type of manner but they unconsciously accept the doll as a family member as they grow used to her existance. Lars failure to fit in with society also adds to his illness. Children seem to be the only ones unaffected by the doll's presence as it seems as if the doll is but another toy. Believing the site which sold the doll and naming it Bianca in the first place puts him under the category of psychologically challenged people.
#2 Though Anne may be considered a "queer" girl for not engaging herself in activities most of the girls her age would involve themselves in, she is not a asperger patient. She does not effect the people around herself with being an outlier of school society. She is simply unique in taste. Many people around the world tend to do what they want to do, but it does not make them mentally challenged. Some people may constantly think of music or connect everything with fashion but that also does not confirm them as patients of psychological illnesses. Her distaste of television is understandable as much as her fondness of poetry is totally acceptable. anne is just a girl who has a different interest, not a different mental status.
